Family Man Larry

Comicspiration Universe - Case Study

‘There’s a bit of Larry in all of us, his situation is relatable but how he reacts is hilarious‘

Ben Keswick – Creative Lead

Meet LARRY, an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life, in an ordinary town, in an ordinar… you get it.

This guys life sucks; he’s doesn’t work out enough (nearly enough), he has a sliiiiiight addicition to super sweet coffee (but trying real hard to cut down), his kids thinks he’s a total loser (probably accurate) oh and his wife Karen – hates his f*cking guts.

FML stands for Family Man Larry or F**K My Life. The story came first as a dream but quickly shape and molded into a fun and exciting story that draws inspiration from Falling Down with Michael Douglas, Family Guy, Mal Cop and parts of the life of writer Alan Grehan (not the murdering anti hero part FYI).

Our Process

Comic Design Process Overview

Step One

Step One

The Web of Ideas

We kick off the process by creating a character description document, which includes personality type, wants, needs and fears and anxieties. We then create a story beat-sheet which is an outline of the story – we’ll visit this again in the script writing stage.

Step Two

Drawing Outside the Box

Our team of artists will develop the visual style and direction for the comic book, we create character designs, environment concepts and agree on a colour palette for the book too.

The Write Stuff

Our writers revisit the story beat-sheet and develop this into a detailed script that outlines the story, dialogue, and narration of the story. The script can include panel descriptions, page layouts and reference material.

The Red Pen of Doom

Once we have client sign off, our artists create a storyboard of the comic from start to finish so we can review the visual delivery of the story in entirety

Pencil Me In

Using the storyboard, our artists create detailed pencil sketches that lay out the composition and detail of each panel of the comic.

The Fine Line

Our artists then ink each of the sketched panels, creating the final line art.

Colour Me Impressed

We apply colour to the line art, either digitally or by hand, to bring the comic to life based on the previously agreed colour palette.
