The first look trailer of the animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has just dropped on Sony’s official YouTube channel and there is a lot to unpack!

We walk you through what the trailer tells us about what to expect, when we will see it and maybe a little hint at the storyline too, so let’s jump right in!

The Trailer

If you loved 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse like us, you have likely been waiting for the sequel since leaving the theatre.

Unfortunately, news was pretty scarce and it’s understandable since making an animated feature-length film requires a whole lot of work to put together, but that all changed today!

Out of the blue, a full 2:29 minute trailer went live and it tells us a lot about the upcoming films. That’s right, I said films, plural! Because Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is just part one of the sequel story!

Catching up with Miles Morales

Right off the bat, we see Miles back in his family home and he has grown a lot.

We are seeing a college-aged Miles as indicated by his reference to his ‘dorm room’, sure he was at a boarding school in the last movie but there is no doubt that both Miles Morales (voiced by Shamiek Moore) and Gwen Stacey (Hawkeye’s very own Hailee Steinfeld) are all grown up, and it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other.

Let’s jump to 2099

Joining the cast is Spider-Man 2099, an awesome character the mind of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created in 1992.

Spider-Man 2099 is a man named Miguel O’Hara, an Irish-Mexican geneticist from the futuristic Nueva York from the year, yeah, you guessed right, 2099.

In the trailer, 2099 looks to be actively fighting against Miles Morales.

There is also a blink and you’ll miss it moment where 2099 inputs a code onto the device on his wrist.

The number on screen is 928 which could refer to the alternate universe he comes from (Like how the classic Peter Parker is from 616) but this could be a hint for keen fans of the comics, if you think you know what it means, we would love to hear it!

The animation is beautiful!

The classic style from the first film is back with some variety to break it up and add even more colour and style to the feature.

From vivid colours and a pop art style lifted straight from the comics to low-fi imagery which adds to the rhythm and pace of the story, start to finish, this promises to be a beautiful movie!

When is Part One coming out?

The film will officially be released on October 7th, 2022 if there are no delays.

Are you excited to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One?
